Also Congratulations to our team at the CrossFit Crippler! You represented The Point well and I was super proud of your performances. Amy, Lindsay, TJ and Ethan all killed it yesterday. I love seeing our members going out and putting their fitness to the test.Finally, today I am excited to announce a new format for the Monday, Wednesday, Friday METCON classes! First of all, for those who don't know. The METCON class has been around for a few months now and if you have friends that are tentative to join because they are intimidated then this is a great class to break them in. It is at 10:30 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.Here's the new format!
Shauna Mayer is the new programmer and instructor for the Metcon class at CrossFit The Point. She graduated with a bachelors in Exercise and Sport science from the University of Utah. She also has a master’s degree in Elementary education from Washington State University. She has been a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and has been involved in interval training since 1997. She also worked as a personal trainer at 24 hour fitness and later as an independent trainer taking clients on activities like mountain running intervals and resistance band training, to the pool for swim training or the park to use the playground for a workout. She also worked as a volunteer in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation at LDS hospital. She taught a parkour exercise class at the University of Utah that was on studio 5 KSL TV and was featured in Wasatch Women’s magazine for this class. She also has experience in weight training, strength and conditioning and Crossfit. Shauna has been involved in many sports throughout her life including soccer, running, field hockey, triathlons and hula dancing. She is excited for the opportunity to work at CrossFit The Point!Metcon stands for metabolic conditioning, a specific type of interval training designed to train your body to work at a higher intensity and increase the efficiency of the body with set work and rest ratios. This increase in efficiency can translate to other areas of your life as well and may even increase your time in your next triathlon or mud run. Many studies are showing that interval training, alternating high and low-intensity efforts, can be beneficial for your heart and lungs, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and lower fat (http://www.acsm.org/docs/brochures/high-intensity-interval-training.pdf). High intensity exercise provide similar benefits as continuous endurance workouts but in shorter periods of time. Your heart rate stays elevated even after the workout is over so that you continue to burn calories. The more you participate in metabolic training the more efficient your body can become!This class at The Point will use a combination of high intensity cardiovascular exercise like running, assault biking, rowing, jumping rope, tuck jumping, etc. combined with resistance training using body weight, kettle bells, battle ropes, TRX bands, etc. Some workouts will use, for example a 30 second work period and a 30 second rest period (Metcon style) and others will use a 1 minute high-intensity work interval followed by a 1 minute lower intensity working interval (HIIT style). Other workouts may be timed stations or include some parkour moves. You will work at your own pace and at your level with a push from your trainer and classmates. No heavy weights will be used to intimidate you from starting today!I really am excited to have Shauna joining us as the METCON instructor and programmer. Please let your friends know and also join her class every now and again to shake things up. CrossFit is all about training in different capacities and different methods.
