Coach Jeffrey Wheeler!

  1. How long have you been at The Point?

Since August of 2015.

  1. What do you do for a living?

I'm a Business Analyst at a company called Ghostery. I'm in charge of the main DB that all of our companies products run on. I’m really just a nerd.

  1. Prior to finding CrossFit what did you do for physical exercise?

I played high school football. This is when I started to learn about lifting. After High School I joined the US Navy and served 5 years as an Air Traffic Controller. While in the navy I lifted and was part of a NATO basketball team where we would play European teams that would visit our base. After the my enlistment I moved back home and played Semi-pro football for a few years. While still doing the globo gym thing.

  1. If you had to pick your favorite accomplishment during your CrossFit journey so far, what would it be?

I don't really have any one accomplishment I have done that I'm proud of but more watching what other people do. Coaching someone to a PR or a first muscle up is better than anything I could do. Watching guys like John White do what he’s done in 6 months is more than what I could do.

  1. What is one piece of advice you could give new CrossFitters that you wish you knew before you began?

My piece of advice is don't compare what you do to anyone else. This is something I need to work on myself. What I mean by this is look at a workout and do what you can do. Push yourself so the workout kicks your butt. If that means you scale then scale. No one is gonna judge you for doing that. Remember CrossFit isn’t about pure strength or pure conditioning is about General Physical Fitness.

  1. What is your favorite movement in CrossFit?

This is a toss up between Squat Cleans or Rowing but I’d have to go with rowing. Us tall guys can usually row. It’s a simple machine that will put you flat on your back. It’s hard because of the size of classes we have but if you’ve never done a wod with rowing repeats in it you’ve never felt the brutality it can bring.

  1. What is your favorite all time WOD you have done?

Fight gone bad. This was my first WOD I did at my first box and has been my favorite ever since. But really as much as I hate anything body weight I love them all even when I don’t do as well as I think I should.

  1. What are your goals for the upcoming year?

  1. Before starting CrossFit what was your view of CrossFit? Not much I heard a little about and saw some people at Gold’s doing it.
  1. Give me a brief summary of your CrossFit journey thus far.

I feel like the old man of CrossFit. I'm in my 9th year of doing CrossFit. My last couple years of football I knew I was getting close to being done with playing because I was getting beat up and realizing playing for free wasn't worth the abuse I was putting my body through. I was doing my normal lifting at Gold’s in the morning. Every morning I would see these group of people doing this crazy s&$% in the corner of the gym (This ended up being MIranda Oldroyd and her then husband). They would bring their own rings and were doing cleans and deads. These weird looking pull-up things. Then just being floored afterwards. I started mimicking some of what they were doing and thought well hey this is pretty cool. I did that on my own for awhile until a friend of my brother in law opened up his own box in my brother in laws dojo. I went for a workout where they were doing a fundraiser for a gentlemen fighting cancer. The workout was Fight Gone Bad. I did the workout promptly went outside puked and laid in the fetal position for the next hour and was hooked. I was at this gym for awhile and moved to Ute CrossFit. I kept hearing about this guy on the radio who played football at the U and took second at the games so I went to his gym. I was there for awhile then moved around a few gyms for different reasons like job changes and what not. Eventually I approached to open up a gym with someone and I got my Level 1. This was a dream come true (for awhile). I opened my gym and was there for about a year until issues arose with a business partner and I walked away. From there I moved around to a couple different gyms coaching and working out along the way. During this time I was to meet a lot of friends along the way. Two of those were Dan and Dave. I competed (got beat a lot by them) against them and at their gym. I was coaching with JoAnn at another gym and realized their goals were different than mine. After talking with her decided to give the point a try and haven't looked back since. My first year at the point was me just being an athlete but I still had that coaching bug. Last year after the summer special Dan runs he asked if I wanted to pick up some classes and help coach the busy 530 am class.Since starting coaching I've got my Level 1 and renewed it. Now in my 7th year of coaching. My CrossFit Kids cert, and Mobility cert. I really hope to get my Level 2 done this year and do a USAW class.Thank you Coach Wheeler.I am glad that all those experiences led you to The Point. You bring a different point of view and coaching style that helps keep our athletes on their toes.
